01Convergence Research Center
Resolving the national and social issues and large-scale technical problems in the industry felt by the people through on-site study among GRIs
Targets of Support: : Projects involving two or more NST’s GRIs and domestic or international industrial, academia research sectors
Areas of Support : Projects solving large national and social issues and developing core technologies in new growth areas that can be felt by the people
Consideration is given to the relevance of science and technology, appropriateness of convergence research, importance of national society, economic ripple effect, etc.
Conducting demand-oriented R&D with the participation of industries
Purpose of Program
To research Mid and long term projects solving national and social issues and developing future leading technology
To solve technical issues in the industrial sector and problems of people’s lives

Within 6 years (3+3)
* After carrying out the 1st stage(3 years) of the study, the assessment determines whether the 2nd stage(3 years) of extension is possible.

Funding scale: 4∼8 billion KRW more or less each year for one center
Funding composition: NST support fund: Maximum 5billion KRW for each center + GRIs matching fund: more than 50% of NST’s support fund
Operation of Center
Main GRI of CRC(Convergence Research Center) provides space for research and administrative support to ensure that the CRC runs smoothly(On-site obligation applies to GRIs under the NST only)
Researchers of GRIs should participate more than 70% of research participation rate
Development of integrated cyber physical system for high rise building and complex facilities using open platform
02Creative Allied Project
Developing fundamental technologies and breaking the limits of technology through challenging and innovative convergence research
Targets of Support : Projects involving two or more NST’s GRIs and domestic or international industrial, academia research sectors
Areas of Support : Convergence research programs solving practical problems based on research plan reflecting the needs of various players and securing the core technology
Creative Allied Project
Projects that satisfies researchers’ needs on convergence research based on each GRI’s own mission
Projects that solve problems reflect demands of industrial and local government sectors, etc.

Within 5 years: Projects aiming at developing core and leading technologies; additional 2nd stage(2 years) can be supported according to assessment after 1st stage(3 years)
Within 3 years: Projects aiming at short term commercialization and practical problem solving
Project Funding Scale
Within 2 billion KRW each year
NST support fund : Maximum 1.4 billion KRW + GRI matching fund : Within 600 million KRW(more than 30% of total research fund)
※Preferential treatment to ongoing projects where more than two GRIs operate with their own financial resources as a convergence research and that can develop into main projects
03Civilian-Military Convergence Research Projects
To form a life-cycle civilian-military convergence technology ecosystem to activate cooperation between the private sector and the military and contribute to the production of substantial technological convergence.
Targets of support : Projects performed by participation of two or more GRIs of the NST and participants from industry, universities, and research institutes.

Supporting pilot studies to validate research topics &ideas prior to the large-scale of convergence research
Targets of Support : Research group composed of researchers from more than two GRIs under the NST
Convergence Pilot Study
Preceding research to confirm the validity of research topics and core ideas before conducting the large scale of convergence research
Presenting the problems in accord with the theme of convergence research, problem solving method using convergence technology
Supporting the experiment, analysis, or prototype production to verify the validity of problem solving method

05Convergence Cluster Projects
To support the establishment of open-type research planning system among GRIs to activate substantial convergence research and to bolsters convergence culture
Targets of support : Research groups consisting of researchers from two or more GRIs of the NST

Type of project
Topics of knowledge-sharing and convergence studies are discovered through multidisciplinary research exchange between areas of science and technology or between science and technology with areas in humanities, sociology, art, etc.
Young researchers from GRIs lead projects to support the network by extending communication between researchers and performing exchange between research areas.
